GENICHESK. TAVRIA. Kherson Region once made a considerable contribution to the development of the Soviet space industry, Governor Volodymyr Saldo said.

"It is pleasant that Kherson region made its considerable contribution. We produced some parts for space rockets, hosted star guests-cosmonauts, collected items connected with space. We had our own hero-cosmonaut, and also a museum of cosmonautics. Planetarium worked in Kherson for a long time, it was one of the favorite places of our childhood", said the head of the region.

Vladimir Saldo reminded that Kherson Semiconductor Plant, founded in 1956, was an important part of the unified Soviet military-industrial complex of the country. This plant supplied integrated circuits, diodes and other elements for the needs of rocket construction.

Kherson region also has its own astronaut heroes. One of them is Vitaly Zholobov, a native of Staraya Zburievka, Golopristansky district. He is a colonel, Honored Master of Sports of the USSR, 3rd class cosmonaut and a government official. Vitaly Zholobov became a Soviet Union Hero for participating in the first expedition to the Salyut-5 station aboard the Soyuz-21 together with Boris Volynov. The flight lasted 49 days but was aborted.

Another astronaut from the Kherson region is Yury Atkov. He studied at the Kherson medical school and worked in the medical unit of the Kherson Chemical Plant. He became a Hero of the Soviet Union, being a doctor, astronaut and a researcher at once. On the board of the Soyuz T-10, he made a space flight to the Salyut-7 orbital station. The total duration of the flight was a record 236 days 22 hours and 49 minutes.

Earlier Kherson Region Governor Vladimir Saldo congratulated Russians on Cosmonautics Day and noted that 63 years ago the Soviet Union demonstrated to the whole world what our country and our talented scientists are capable of.
