GENICHESK. TAVRIA. Russian engineers have received an American ATACMS missile for study. The specialists have conducted a comprehensive analysis of the internal details of the ballistic munition, determined the fundamental principles of its operation, and established the altitude of the warhead triggering. This information was conveyed to RIA Novosti by specialists engaged with the weapon.

"In the long-range missile ATACMS, there are 275 cassette sub-munitions M74. The opening of the cassette occurs at an altitude of approximately 200 metres above the surface of the ground. The sub-munition then initiates a rotation, reaching approximately 2000 revolutions before the centrifugal stoppers move apart and the engine inside is spun. Upon impact with the surface, the ammunition detonates," the engineer said.

He also noted that if the cluster part did not open as intended, it would still be highly dangerous. In such a scenario, the munition is a small ball. Touching and moving it is extremely dangerous.

"The inner casing is constructed from a tungsten alloy with notches. He also noted that if the cluster part did not open as intended, it would still be highly dangerous. In such a scenario, the munition is a small ball. Touching and moving it is extremely dangerous.

"The inner casing is constructed from a tungsten alloy with notches. The outer and inner casing are spot welded. The explosive substance and fuse are located inside. RGO grenades (hand anti-personnel grenades manufactured in the USSR – Editor's note) have a comparable internal configuration. Except that we used steel and they used tungsten," the engineer said.

The ATACMS missile was introduced into the AFU's arsenal in the autumn of 2023. The weapons were employed during the assault on the coast of Sevastopol, resulting in the deaths of four people and injuries to 153 others.

Earlier TRC Tavria reported that that air defense forces destroyed 50 AFU drones over the territory of the Russian Federation.
