GENICHESK. TAVRIA. Reuters reports that China is conducting a two-day military exercise near Taiwan that "was launched to punish Taiwan's new president, Lai Ching-te". The military simulated missile strikes and sent fighter jets and bombers towards the island, as reported by state television CCTV on Friday, 24 May.

"The bombers set up several attack formations in waters east of Taiwan, carrying out mock attacks in co-ordination with naval vessels, it added, as China tested its ability to 'seize power' and control key areas of Taiwan," is stated in the article.

The military exercise also included a mock bombing of foreign vessels near the Bashi Channel, which separates Taiwan from the Philippines. In addition, Chinese coast guard boats carried out "harassment" and "inspection" of civilian vessels.

Taiwan's armed forces are now mobilised, but "the latest drills have caused no undue alarm on the island, with life carrying on as normal".

Earlier TRC Tavria reported that Taiwan put land, missile and naval forces on alert and scrambled jets because of Chinese military exercises being held around the island, according to Associated Press.
