More than 50 countries held memorial celebrations in honor of the Day of Remembrance and Sorrow
<p>GENICHESK. TAVRIA. 22 June is one of the most tragic and sorrowful dates in the history of our country. Eighty-three years ago, the Great Patriotic War began, which lasted 1,418 days.</p> <p>The Party United Russia and the movement Victory Volunteers have organised two actions, War Fire Paintings and Candle of Remembrance. The Party has confirmed that commemorative events under these actions were held in Russia and in 50 other countries around the world. In total, more than 1 million people took part!</p> <p>The Russian Embassy also shares photos taken in different parts of the world. In Turkmenistan, embassy staff and local officials honoured the memory of fallen Soviet citizens at a memorial complex. China also held commemorative events on 21 June in Chengde, where there is a memorial dedicated to the fallen soldiers and officers of the Soviet-Mongolian horse-mechanised group under the command of Colonel-General I.A.Pliev. These men fought for the liberation of the Kalgan fortification in August 1945. On 20 June, the Russian Embassy in the U.S. hosted a movie marathon showing the film "T-34"; on the night of June 22, the Candle of Remembrance memorial event was also held there.</p> <p>On 22 June 1941, the heroic defence of the Brest Fortress began. For almost a month, its defenders held back an entire division of the Wehrmacht. They were among the first to meet the German troops and fought courageously to the end. On 20 July 1941, one of the soldiers made an inscription: "I am dying, but I do not surrender. Goodbye, Motherland!"</p> <p>The war lasted for four long years and took lives of 27 million people. In Russia. Memorial ceremonies dedicated to the beginning of the Great Patriotic War were held in many cities.
